Google Releases Website Translator Gadget

October 1, 2009

There are all sorts of reasons for English speakers to view foreign websites (for info on the latest performance car parts available in Japan, for example, or for local coverage of any news event), and presumably a few people who don't speak English would like to see our sites, too.  Google's introduced a translation gadget to help them.

A post on the Official Google Blog explained that the "new website translator gadget powered by Google Translate . . . enables you to make your site's content available in 51 languages.  Now, when people visit your page, if their language (as determined by their browser settings) is different than the language of your page, they'll be prompted to automatically translate the page into their own language."

It's difficult to imagine a much simpler option from a user's point of view.  Google's not making things too hard on sites' owners, either.  They only need to copy and paste a snippet of code that's about 300 characters in length into the blog or site.

It's important to note, of course, that Google isn't promising perfect translations.  If the subject of a site is highly technical, the translation gadget might not do anyone except the most rabid disciples (see the car parts example above) much good.

Still, since Google's making it so easy to cater to a global audience, there seems to be little reason not to give its new gadget a chance.

Microsoft And Nokia Strike Mobile Deal

August 13, 2009

Microsoft and Nokia announced an alliance on Wednesday to make Microsoft Office software available on Nokia's Symbian devices.

The software and cell phone companies said Nokia will start offering Microsoft Office Communicator Mobile on its smartphones next year, followed by other Office applications and related software and services in the future.

"With more than 200 million smartphone customers globally, Nokia is the world's largest smartphone manufacturer and a natural partner for us," said Stephen Elop, Microsoft Business Division President.

"Today's announcement will enable us to expand Microsoft Office Mobile to Nokia smartphone owners worldwide and allow them to collaborate on Office documents from anywhere, as part of our strategy to provide the best productivity experience across the PC, phone and browser."

The move by Nokia will help it better compete against Research in Motion while making Microsoft's Office software available to a much larger global audience.

The two companies said the new partnership will not impact Microsoft's Windows Mobile and Nokia's Symbian operating system for smartphone. Nokia does not have plans to make a Widows Mobile device.

"The scope of the alliance between Microsoft and Nokia, and potential value for the enterprise and individual is significant," said Stephen Drake, VP of Mobility & Telecom at IDC.

"By bringing Microsoft's productivity solutions to Nokia's large customer base, the two companies should be better able to serve the needs of the growing mobile worker population, which IDC estimates to reach 1 billion worldwide in 2011."

July 18, 2009

As a successful web publisher looking to get to the next level, you are probably thinking about trying a number of different approaches to increasing revenue – especially your passive revenue, the money that just “shows up” from time to time while you focus on other things. You may be considering various forms of internet advertising. And you should.
Internet advertising has exceeded all expectations. The technology keeps advancing, and the popularity and ubiquity of the medium is incredible. Most companies can benefit from the Internet because it allows the chance to reach a global audience at never-before-possible speeds, with many kinds of filters to make sure the right audience sees the right message, and costs that are often surprisingly low. But many businesses make money online in ways that have very little to do with their own actual business, but with systems that connect various companies and offerings together.
You may be wondering how to make money easily with online advertising, and you have come to the right place!
The secret is that taking ads is a much more profitable strategy then placing ads for most websites. And the best way to make money with this right now is “hiding in plain sight” from the world’s most popular search engine company.
While there are many ways to approach online advertising, it makes sense the best would be offered by the ultimate search engine company, the company that is setting out to organize all of humanity’s vast amounts of information – Google. This method is Google Ad Words, and it’s sister program, Google AdSense. With Ad Words, Google makes a lot of money. With AdSense, web publishers – that’s you! – can reach a lot of people and make a lot of money too!
