Facebook’s Merry Christmas: Becomes Most Visited US Site

December 29, 2009

According to new statistics from Hitwise, a lot of people may not have done the Norman Rockwell thing this holiday season, gathering around a fire with family members.  Instead, they may picked computer screens and online friends, helping propel Facebook to a new high.

A 136-character tweet from the Hitwise_US account announced the big news this morning: "Facebook was the most visited site in the US on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. 1st time the site has been the #1 visited US site ever."

Of course, the shift to Facebook doesn't signal the end of civilization; the site just provides a way for people to connect with friends and relatives who aren't located under the same roof.  And there's no evidence that folks didn't actually get together whenever possible and then just visit Facebook in their spare time.

The real story is more that Facebook beat every retail site that was experiencing a seasonal high, along with traditional leaders in the most-visited-site competition like Yahoo, Yahoo Mail, and Google.

This would be a huge deal under any circumstances, and gains additional importance given that Facebook scored its win so soon after a somewhat controversial overhaul of the site's privacy settings.  It looks like members weren't exactly scared off.

Moving forward, it'll be interesting to see whether Facebook can sustain this unprecedented level of traffic, or if things will quiet down a lot as students and professionals go back to school and work.

Google Shares Top Retail Searches for the Holiday Season

December 24, 2009

Google has shared the top retail searches for the 2009 holiday season. These results are based on the company's Insights for Search tool.

"Using Google Insights for Search, we can see that the hottest toys over the last seven days include stalwarts like Pikachu and Legos, as well as newcomers, such as the Nerf Marshmellow Shooter and the surprise hit of the holiday season, a blanket-with-sleeves known as the Snuggie," says Eric Lopez of the Google Retail Team.

Google - Rising Searches

"In the shopping category, we've seen Black Friday reach new heights, toping the rising search term list over the last 30 days as consumers continue to seek out the best prices," adds Lopez. "Consumers too continue to turn to familiar, top retailers such as Walmart, Best Buy, Amazon and Macy's."

Google - Rising Searches

Google has been encouraging retailers to start looking ahead to the rest of the Winter season with regards to what people will be searching for: things like Valentine's Day gifts, Prom dresses, wedding planning, ski equipment, etc.

On a positive note for retailers, new research from Market Force Info finds that a good percentage of consumers intend to "splurge" on at least one item over the next few months.

Google/NORAD Santa Tracking About to Begin Again

December 23, 2009

The North American Aerospace Defense Command, otherwise known as NORAD is tracking Santa Claus's rounds this year, keeping up a tradition that has been going on for 54 years.

Norad has been working with Google for several years by way of Google Maps and Google Earth. Last year, they started using Google Analytics as well. Google is now sharing a video of last year's Santa tracking:

On the YouTube blog, Jeff Martin writes:

Oooh, it's almost Christmas! And that means that Santa is about to leave his digs at the North Pole to embark upon his '09 World Tour, placing presents under the trees of good little girls and boys all over the planet. Where will he be, and when will he make it to your house?

You can find the answer at
www.noradsanta.org . You see, every year, NORAD, the North American Aerospace Defense Command, tracks Santa's journey from the time he lifts off from his Arctic village to his final stop in Hawaii at the end of a looooooooong night. You can join the ride at Noradsanta.org or try m.noradsanta.org if you prefer to do your Santa tracking on a mobile phone. You'll also want to subscribe to the NORAD Tracks Santa YouTube channel , which will contain videos of many of his stops around the world, all captured by NORAD's Santa Cam network.

Check out the related articles below for our coverage of Santa tracking from years past. If you go to NORAD's site, you can see a live countdown leading up to Santa's flight.
