Hulu CEO Shares 2009 Stats
December 31, 2009
Hulu had a good 2009, and to celebrate the end of it, the company's CEO, Jason Kilar, has decided to share some stats. Here's a quick hint as to just how successful his organization was: to describe Hulu's growth, the word "double" often doesn't cut it.

In a post on the Hulu Blog, Kilar started off by relaying some data from comScore. It seems that "[m]onthly users of Hulu . . . grew to over 43 million, a 95 percent increase over this time last year." Also, "[m]onthly streams . . . grew to 924 million, a 307 percent increase from this time last year."
Of course, these trends weren't without their causes and effects. Kilar noted that Hulu's content library has gotten bigger, offering 14,000 hours of content now versus 5,600 hours one year ago. And while Hulu was in touch with just 166 advertisers at the end of 2008, it's now doing business with 408 of them.
Then here are some facts about what specific videos people watched. SNL, Family Guy, The Office, The Simpsons, and Naruto Shippuden were the most popular shows, and SNL's "Motherlover" sketch and Family Guy's "Stew-Roids" installment were the most popular clip and full episode. Meanwhile, the live stream of Barack Obama's inauguration was the most-embedded video.
Anyway, Kilar concluded, "On behalf of the Hulu team, thank you for joining us in the adventure that was 2009 and we look forward to even greater heights in 2010."

Facebook Connect Has Impressive First Year
December 10, 2009
Facebook Connect has now been around for a year. In that time it has accomplished quite a lot, and perhaps allowed developers and webmasters to accomplish even more.
"From social widgets like the Comments Box, Share button and Live Stream Box to deeper integrations including log in, Facebook Connect is helping developers drive more traffic to their site, ease the registration process, and provide a more engaging experience for users," says Ethan Beard, who leads the Facebook Developer Network. "By adding social elements through Facebook Connect, websites in a variety of verticals are revolutionizing industries."

Facebook shares the following stats for Facebook Connect:
- More than 80,000 websites and other services have implemented Facebook Connect since its general availability in December 2008
- More than 60 million Facebook users engage with Facebook Connect on external services every month (not including mobile use of Facebook)
- Two-thirds of comScore's US Top 100 websites and half of comScore’s Global Top 100 websites have implemented Facebook Connect
A lot of people on the web have probably used Facebook Connect and have no idea what Facebook Connect even is. Sometimes it's just as simple as logging on to a website with your Facebook information. As more sites integrate it, it's just starting to become part of the routine.
Integration will likely continue to grow significantly around the web, because Facebook isn't showing too many signs of losing users. The company just recently surpassed the 350 million users mark. Facebook is going to be even more in people's faces than ever too, now that Google is showing real-time search results for many queries.

MySpace’s “New Moon” Webcast Brings In 3m Viewers
November 18, 2009
Leading up to MySpace's live stream of red carpet arrivals at the world premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, we indicated that onlookers should expect a big traffic spike. Now, the statistics are in, and "ginormous traffic mountain" is more like it.
In an email to WebProNews, a MySpace representative stated that the webcast attracted over 2 million uniques and a total of almost 3 million viewers. Those large numbers are about equal to the populations of Houston and Chicago, respectively.

The MySpace rep then made clear that this "[m]arks the highest number of total viewers for any Ustream red carpet webcast," and that the New Moon premiere qualifies as "the farthest-reaching event Ustream has streamed to date."
It's hard to imagine that MySpace won't pursue further Twilight tie-ins as a result. More movies are on the way, after all, and plenty of fans would probably visit the site in order to see exclusive interviews, fresh trailers, or just stale footage of the stars playing checkers.
Promotions involving other movies may proliferate, too, given that this could become a fairly cheap and steady way for the social network to bring in eyeballs.

MySpace To Host Exclusive Stream Of “New Moon” Red Carpet
November 11, 2009
Don't be surprised if MySpace experiences a big traffic spike on Monday, November 16th. The social network intends to host a live stream of red carpet arrivals at the world premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.
In one sense, this could have been something of a cheap trick; it's a good bet that boatloads of young girls would tune in even if they could only catch a glimpse of Robert Pattinson and listen to a random correspondent babble. MySpace is demonstrating its influence and taking things quite a bit further, though, offering fans an exclusive experience.
According to an official statement emailed to WebProNews, "Viewers will . . . be able to take part by posting comments or questions to The Twilight Saga: New Moon Premiere MySpace page that may then be presented to the celebrities during the broadcast."
What's more, "Anya Marina, writer and performer of 'Satellite Heart' on The Twilight Saga: New Moon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, will co-host the broadcast."

So consider passing word of the event along to any relatives or friends who are Twilight fans. And with respect to what sort of traffic numbers MySpace might see, it should interest even the franchise's biggest detractors to know that the New Moon trailer received a whopping 4.2 million views within 24 hours of its debut on MySpace.
