Paramount Launches Clip Website For Businesses

December 16, 2009

Paramount Pictures has launched an online service to sell its movie clips to businesses in an effort to combat declining DVD revenue.

ParamountClips.com is powered by Digitalsmiths VideoSense platform. Users can search the Paramount library by actor, locations, or lines of dialogue. VideoSense combs through the collected metadata to locate the relevant clip.  Clips can be reformatted, exported to any platform that plays video, and monetized.

Currently the site has clips from around 80 films including "Forrest Gump," "Top Gun," "Iron Man," and "Star Trek." Paramount plans to add 200 more films over time and eventually have about 1,000 of its titles available. The site will also open up to non-business users, but it's not clear when that will happen.

"This new platform enables Paramount to create a 'digital blueprint' of our entire film library that can be monetized across an unlimited combination of screens, interactive applications, strategic initiatives and business relationships worldwide," said Geremie Camara, VP of Product Development for Paramount Digital Entertainment.

"With the Digitalsmiths technology, we are opening new revenue streams for our premium film and clip library."

MySpace’s “New Moon” Webcast Brings In 3m Viewers

November 18, 2009

Leading up to MySpace's live stream of red carpet arrivals at the world premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon, we indicated that onlookers should expect a big traffic spike.  Now, the statistics are in, and "ginormous traffic mountain" is more like it.

In an email to WebProNews, a MySpace representative stated that the webcast attracted over 2 million uniques and a total of almost 3 million viewers.  Those large numbers are about equal to the populations of Houston and Chicago, respectively.

The MySpace rep then made clear that this "[m]arks the highest number of total viewers for any Ustream red carpet webcast," and that the New Moon premiere qualifies as "the farthest-reaching event Ustream has streamed to date."

It's hard to imagine that MySpace won't pursue further Twilight tie-ins as a result.  More movies are on the way, after all, and plenty of fans would probably visit the site in order to see exclusive interviews, fresh trailers, or just stale footage of the stars playing checkers.

Promotions involving other movies may proliferate, too, given that this could become a fairly cheap and steady way for the social network to bring in eyeballs.

Animators Collaborate on Facebook All the Way to the Theaters

November 18, 2009

Last fall, Mass Animation, which calls itself the largest global animation collaboration ever, posted an invitation on Facebook for artists around the world to collaborate on the making of an animated short film. This film is now getting a theatrical release this week with Columbia Pictures' Planet 51 release. It's called "Live Music."

"When artists arrived at Mass Animation's virtual studio on Facebook, they were given the essential tools and animation software necessary to participate, including individual storyboards and 3D models bundled for download along with guidelines on animation," a representative for Facebook tells WebProNews. "Through the social networking features of the application, animated shots could then be viewed, voted on and shared with friends."

"'Live Music' reflects the input of  58,000+ participants from 101 countries and 51 animators who collaborated in the making of this unique film, which introduces Mass Animation to the world," she adds.

Mass Animation has illustrated to a great extent what can truly be acheived with collaboration efforts on Facebook (or social media in general). It probably helps that Mass Animation puts so much focus on Facebook as a tool. They even use their Facebook page as their website. If you go to massanimation.com, it redirects to facebook.com/massanimation. That's some dedication to a specific channel.

Now Mass Animation is involved in another Facebook project with Sony Online Entertainment and DC Comics. This week the DC Universe Online Animation Contest was announced. This is being called version 2.0 of the Mass Animation FB app and will give DC fans, gamers, and animators a chance to animate characters from the DC Universe online game that Sony is developing. This is another example of Mass Animation allowing fans to collaborate on a big product. The contest will launch on December 7.

MySpace To Host Exclusive Stream Of “New Moon” Red Carpet

November 11, 2009

Don't be surprised if MySpace experiences a big traffic spike on Monday, November 16th.  The social network intends to host a live stream of red carpet arrivals at the world premiere of The Twilight Saga: New Moon.

In one sense, this could have been something of a cheap trick; it's a good bet that boatloads of young girls would tune in even if they could only catch a glimpse of Robert Pattinson and listen to a random correspondent babble.  MySpace is demonstrating its influence and taking things quite a bit further, though, offering fans an exclusive experience.

According to an official statement emailed to WebProNews, "Viewers will . . . be able to take part by posting comments or questions to The Twilight Saga: New Moon Premiere MySpace page that may then be presented to the celebrities during the broadcast."

What's more, "Anya Marina, writer and performer of 'Satellite Heart' on The Twilight Saga: New Moon Original Motion Picture Soundtrack, will co-host the broadcast."

So consider passing word of the event along to any relatives or friends who are Twilight fans.  And with respect to what sort of traffic numbers MySpace might see, it should interest even the franchise's biggest detractors to know that the New Moon trailer received a whopping 4.2 million views within 24 hours of its debut on MySpace.
